David worked until it was dark outside. The constant noise of the machine roared in his ears. While the machine passed over him, David lay flat, as if glued to the floor.

All the while, George walked up and down between the machines. He yelled at the workers and fingered his leather belt. David didn’t know if he was more scared of the machine or of George.

When the bell finally rang and the machines had been turned off, David staggered to the table where he forced himself to eat supper—salted herring, boiled potatoes, dark bread, and a glass of tea. After they had finished eating, he followed Aaron up to a room on the second floor of the factory.

“That’s your bed,” Aaron said, pointing to a cot leaning against a dirty wall. “And don’t bother me.” He undressed, rolled into bed, and was soon fast asleep.

All night long, bedbugs burrowed out of the cracks in the wall and feasted on David’s flesh. He tried to squash the bugs, but they were like an army invading his body. He felt as if he were being eaten alive, one morsel at a time.
